Save the Hempstead Plains is a grassroots coalition of environmental and ecological organizations, conservationists, scientists and community advocates dedicated to preserving, protecting and restoring the last remaining 100 acres of an endangered ecosystem that once covered 400,000 acres on Long Island.
The proposed $6 billion, 72-acre casino and hotel development being considered for the Nassau Hub (the site of the Nassau Coliseum), will irrevocably damage this precious local ecosystem.
The last remaining acres of the Hempstead Plains are vital to the survival of 30 endangered, threatened, rare grassland species.
Read about the problems in the Sands DEIS, as described in the official Comments from supporters of the Hempstead Plains.
Efforts to reduce the environmental impact of the Sands proposal are gaining traction.
Written comments on the proposed lease and/or DEIS should be submitted by email to sandscomments@nassaucountyny.gov by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 21, 2025.
